Premier League 4 Sport - Judo Event
10.12.2010The Sutton Academy hosted the first Premier League 4 Sport Judo event on Wednesday 8 December.
Premier League 4 Sport is a project which involves all 20 Premier League football teams linking up with community sports clubs and secondary schools to help attract young people in their area to take up the Olympic sports of judo, badminton, table tennis and volleyball. It is part of the 2012 Olympic Games sport participation initiative.
It involved over 80 students from schools associated with Everton, Liverpool, Manchester City, Manchester United, Bolton an Stoke City football clubs. Students were involved in a range of judo games during the morning and then participated in a fight tournament in the afternoon. The Sutton Academy was represented by 14 students, all of whom won medals.
All of the Year 9 students spent one period a week during Project 7 developing their judo skills and successfully competed against students currently practising judo.
Karl Lyon in Year 7 is the younger brother of Daniel Lyon a former student, who completed his GCSEs last year, and is now a member of the British Judo Squad and currently training in Japan.
