Throughout March and April, young people from The Sutton Academy have been involved in an academic research project with Liverpool John Moores University.

The aim of the study was to investigate relationships between young people and the police. There has been little research done in the past representing young people's views and opinions about this issue; their thoughts, feelings and experiences.

The project involved the researcher spending time with School Constable Halliwell, interviews with students and the recruitment of a youth research team to represent the voices of young people. Many issues have been identified by participating young people that will be presented by the youth research team to key stakeholders, including senior officers from Merseyside Police. The research team will be holding their first presentation meeting on Thursday 21st April 2011.

Katharine Evans, the researcher from Liverpool John Moores University, would like to thank the school community for taking part in the project; “The staff and students from The Sutton Academy have been very welcoming and supportive. I am grateful to all the young people that have taken the time to speak with me and share their thoughts. I would particularly like to thank the youth research team for their hard work, their leadership has been integral to the success of the project”.
