Under 13s Rounders Tournament
19.06.2012The academies first Rounders fixture of the year took place last week at the annual St Helens Rounders Tournament at Ruskin Drive.
We entered into the U13’s competition with a new year 7/8 team who have only recently took up the sport, training on Tuesdays after school.
The girls had to learn all the complex rules and very tactical game plays before the event but despite their inexperience, produced some fine performances against the other schools.
We got off to a flyer in the first match, comfortable beating St Augustines 9 -2. The team really demonstrated what they had learnt and surprised Miss Lithgow and Mrs Whiteside with a brilliant start. They then faced Haydock which ended in a close draw, 4 ½ - 4 ½ apiece. The girls’ last group match was against a strong Hope Academy side who we had to beat to get through to the semi-finals. We went into bat first scoring 4 ½ rounders. As the last ball was bowled, The Sutton Academy were in the lead by ½ a rounder so the pressure was on for their last batter, who placed the ball perfectly in between our fielders. Our fielders did a good job of getting the ball back to the posts but their player judged the play brilliantly and managed to push to 4th before it was stumped, clinching the match for Hope. Unfortunately other results didn’t go our way and we narrowly missed out on a semi- final spot.
The girls were fantastic all afternoon and showed what a strong team they’re going to be in the future after picking up the game so quickly.
Well done to everyone who took part!
Miss Lithgow & Mrs Whiteside
