The Sutton Academy v St Cuthbert’s & The Sutton Academy v Haydock

This week our latest cohort of top level Rugby League players took to the field to represent The Sutton Academy. Their first game in black and purple was against arch rivals St Cuthbert’s and got off to a flying start with Scrum half Sean Arnold crossing the line after a well worked set with good yards and organisation from Stand-off Liam Jackson and great strength from Props Tyler McCabe and Ethan Lee. Centre George Jackson added the extras and performed well in all physical encounters. Following a number of back to back defensive sets with hard tackling from Hayden Rennie and Nathan Calland in the back rows and despite scrambling defensive work from Leon McHugh, Connor McCarten and Rhys Mckenna St Cuthbert's cleverly attacked and scored from within their own half. Undeterred Reece Jackson already proving himself to be an influential player rallied the team and attacks launched through the hands of Sean Campbell and jinking runs from Josh Owen and Leon McHugh made good progress but finishing and set completion for the new side was difficult against a very good St Cuthbert's outfit who went on to win by the narrowist of margins.  MVP Conner McCarten.

With a huge squad the Sutton warriors could almost field 2 sides and fresh legs came on to play against Haydock in the competition. Reece Jackson captained the side and new arrivals Ross Healy, Jacob Terry and Nathan Barr made big impact breaking tackles and winning the floor allowing Zach Aldred, Cameron Barlow Ross Tongue and Adam Drought to take advantage running at a broken Haydock defence. Ian Kenyon brought organisation to the recently bonded team with Reece McKenna and Joe Stromberg making vital contributions as Sutton went on to win convincingly. “The lads really began to gel together, they have a promising future” Coach Ben Roberts “I was very impressed with their efforts, enthusiasm and commitment, they are definite St Helens cup winners material.” Manager Reece Pilling
