Year 8 - Rugby Success
28.03.2011The Year 8 Rugby League team have taken their 2nd successive St Helens Cup. They faced a very able St Augustine’s side who recently made it to the semi finals of the National Cup. This quickly showed as despite the brave and passionate defence led by Connor Langley and Ryan Murphy the defending champs found themselves 18-0 down at half time. But this team has been up against the wall before having won the St Helens 9s Competition with just 7 players last year! An Al Pacino esq speech from Coaches Ben Etchells and Tom Rigby fired the lads up and they began playing with skill and pace hard yards from Cameron Tunstall-Muil, and slick handling from stand off Lewis Furlong put Jack Highcock in for their first try and the team who had never lost hope fought back from a position where many would crumble, Jordy Cresser added the extras with his boot. Ste Sherwood then went across the line with a move going through the hands of Scott Houghton and Jordy Cresser. Nothing could now stop this juggernaut team and Jack Unsworth scored a crucial try and Jack Highcock devastated the St Augustine’s defence by scoring three more tries from within his own half. Jordy Cresser popped 2 more kicks over the crossbar.
Final score 30-18. The determination and spirit shown by this group of students was truly incredible and the parents and staff who turned out to support the Year 8s witnessed something truly wonderful.
