Science

For The Sutton Academy, Science is more than simply test tubes and Bunsen burners. We encourage our students to look at Science as a whole, from Sports Science on the pitch to Food Science in the cookery rooms, and help students understand and embrace health sciences. This will then underpin the Academy's commitment to promoting wellbeing to students and their families.

In KS3, we follow a bespoke programme that follows the National Curriculum, aimed at stimulating young learners understanding of Science in the world around them.

At KS4, we offer more traditional GCSE’s in Core Science, Additional Science and Further Additional Science that are using the AQA Specification.

We also offer BTEC Level 2 Science for students who prefer researching with less emphasis on terminal exams.

Finally at Key Stage 5, we offer A-Levels in Biology, Chemistry and Physics with a BTEC level 3 in Applied Science to follow on from Level 2.

The Sutton Academy runs various Science clinics for students to supplement their learning most evenings after school. There is also a STEM club on Wednesday’s at 2.40-3.40pm. This covers the wider aspects of Science that also covers Technology, Engineering and Maths.

The Eco club decided that for its first project they would like to increase the biodiversity on the site. Funding was secured from the National Lottery's Awards for all scheme in November 2010 and work got underway for Biodiversity Project 2011 in the New Year.

Biodiversity Project 2011

We are aiming to build bird boxes, bird feeders, hedgehog homes and insect houses, as well as renovating an old pond within the school grounds. This pond has been disserted for some time and recently become dry but several years ago the pond contained crested newt. We would like to re-establish the pond as the centre of our ecosystem to encourage a wide range of wildlife to our school community. We are hoping to educate the members about the importance of protecting and encouraging wildlife so that they can pass the message onto our school community and the wider community. We also want to plant vegetables that the members can take home to use and encourage healthy eating. The pond will be play a vital role in the school curriculum as it will be used by the Science, Geography and other departments to aid learning.
