Throughout February, the academy will be celebrating Lunar New Year with a vibrant programme of cultural, creative and physical activities designed to bring students together and explore Chinese traditions.

Students will have the opportunity to take part in a variety of events across the academy, giving them insight into the customs, values and celebrations associated with Lunar New Year while promoting community spirit and wellbeing.

The celebrations begin on Tuesday 3 February, with an Inter‑House Table Tennis Competition taking place after school in the Sports Hall. One of China’s most popular sports, the competition will see students competing head‑to‑head in a fast‑paced and friendly tournament that encourages participation, teamwork and house pride.

Creativity will take centre stage on Thursday 5 February, when students can take part in Chinese Lantern Making in the Tech Plaza. During the session, students will design and create their own traditional lanterns, learning about their cultural significance and how lanterns symbolise good fortune and new beginnings during Lunar New Year celebrations.

As part of the PE curriculum, students will also experience Tai Chi and Martial Arts sessions during lessons in the week commencing Monday 9 February. These sessions will introduce students to movements inspired by traditional Chinese practices, promoting balance, focus and calm while encouraging physical activity.

To conclude the celebrations, the academy will host a Wear Red Day on Friday 27 February. Students and staff are encouraged to wear a red item to school, as red is traditionally associated with luck and prosperity. Participants will also receive a fortune cookie to bring them good luck for the year ahead.

In addition, a selected group of students will take part in a cultural trip to Liverpool’s Chinatown later in February, where they will have the opportunity to sample authentic Chinese cuisine and experience the cultural heart of one of the UK’s oldest Chinese communities.

These events form part of the academy’s ongoing commitment to celebrating diversity, promoting cultural understanding and creating inclusive experiences for all members of the academy community.
