Foundational Knowledge
At The Sutton Academy, we believe every student should develop the essential knowledge, skills and vocabulary needed to access a broad and ambitious curriculum. These foundations enable students to build confidence, make meaningful connections in their learning and achieve success across all subjects.
Our Approach
We secure foundational knowledge through:
- A carefully sequenced, knowledge-rich curriculum.
- High-quality teaching that promotes understanding and long-term retention.
- Regular retrieval practice to revisit and strengthen prior learning.
- Effective assessment that identifies strengths, misconceptions and gaps.
- Timely interventions that provide additional support where needed.
- A strong focus on literacy, numeracy and communication skills.
Literacy and Numeracy
Developing strong literacy and numeracy skills is central to our curriculum.
We support students through:
- Reading opportunities across all subjects.
- Explicit teaching of vocabulary and academic language.
- Structured discussions that develop speaking and listening skills.
- Sparx Reader and Sparx Maths programmes.
- Targeted support for students requiring additional intervention.
Reading for Success
We are committed to developing confident, capable readers and fostering a lifelong love of reading.
Our library provides students with access to a wide range of fiction, non-fiction and curriculum-focused texts, while reading is actively promoted through lessons, enrichment activities and whole-school initiatives.
Supporting Every Learner
We recognise that students begin their learning journeys at different starting points. Through assessment, personalised support and targeted intervention programmes, we ensure that all students can access the full curriculum and make strong progress.
For students with additional needs, including those with EHCPs, specialist provision through our Gold Curriculum provides tailored support while maintaining high expectations and ambition.
Our Goal
By placing foundational knowledge at the heart of our curriculum, we equip students with the knowledge, skills and confidence they need to succeed in education and beyond.
